THE REASSURANCE PROGRAM
(operates in New Castle County only)

The Reassurance Program, like every other part of CONTACT Delaware, seeks to meet some special human need. In the case of the Reassurance Program, it is meeting the need of those people who are particularly vulnerable to exceptional feelings of loneliness. Social scientists have learned that much pain is experienced through social isolation. This isolation, often created by the aging and handicapping processes, produces a void which can only be overcome by sharing it with another person. Such sharing is exactly what the Reassurance Program of CONTACT Delaware is all about.

The purposes of the Reassurance Program are to:

  • Check on the well-being of vulnerable persons on a daily basis
  • Befriend the elderly, homebound, handicapped or those in need of daily reassurance by telephone
  • Encourage people to take responsibility for their basic life necessities -eating, going to the doctor, taking their medications, etc.
  • Reassure patients recently released from the hospital
  • Serve as an intermediary between clients and other services
  • Help people to remain in their own homes and prevent the need for institutionalization

The basic premise of the Reassurance Program of CONTACT Delaware is that people living alone, perhaps homebound with few regular contacts, need and will appreciate the "reassurance" of knowing that someone will call them regularly to see how they are and to chat for a few minutes, thereby providing a reassuring aspect to their lives. Everyone needs to know that someone cares, that someone is concerned about them, their person, situation and needs. In summary, the Reassurance Program of CONTACT Delaware is offered for those people in special situations who might want the reassurance of knowing that someone will call them regularly.
