Volunteer Training Programs

 

Volunteer

ContactLifeline is a volunteer agency that provides four essential services to the Delaware Community:

  • Crisis Helpline, a 24 hour telephone counseling/ crisis helpline
  • Deaf Helpline, a 24 hour telephone counseling/ crisis helpline and link-up service for the deaf and hearing impaired
  • Rape Crisis, 24 hour telephone counseling/ crisis helpline with supportive services for victims of sexual assault.
  • Reassurance Program, Provides daily telephone reassurance and caring human interaction to the lonely and disenfranchised elderly/homebound population.

ContactLifeline PHILOSOPHY

Through nonjudgmental listening, and non directive problem solving skills, volunteers help callers identify their problem and come to their own resolution. 

TRAINING PROGRAM

The 50-hour training program offers a balance of topical lectures by community human services professionals, communication skills building small group exercises facilitated by ContactLifeline training staff and supervised apprenticeship shifts on the helpline.

REGISTRATION

Registration for the training program is limited to persons intending to become ContactLifeline volunteers. Acceptance of registration does not ensure acceptance for telephone duty on the helpline. The minimum age is 18 years old.

ATTENDANCE

Due to the balanced instructional and skill building nature of the training classes, trainees may not miss more than two sessions.

APPRENTICE TRAINING

In addition to the training classes, each trainee is required to complete apprenticeship shifts on the helpline. Apprenticeship training is scheduled by trainees during the later part of the training program.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

Upon successful completion of the training program, ContactLifeline volunteers commit to 8 hours a month ( two 4-hour shifts or one 8-hour shift )

FREQUENCY OF TRAINING

The volunteer training program is offered semiannually, generally in the spring and fall of each YEAR.

COST

There is a fee to partially cover the costs of training materials and support for the training program.
